Dr. Angela Sekely, PhD, C.Psych.
Clinical & Neuropsychologist
Dr. Angela Sekely has extensive experience conducting psychological and neuropsychological assessments, as well as providing evidence-based treatments to adults and seniors with diverse needs related to mental health and neurological conditions. Commonly addressed issues include Depressive and Anxiety Disorders, self-criticism, perfectionism, interpersonal issues, grief, trauma, and adjustment difficulties, including coping with cancer. With her advanced training in neuropsychology, she has a particular interest in providing psychotherapy to individuals that have cognitive or neurological conditions, including brain tumors, epilepsy, healthy aging, mild cognitive impairment, and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as family members of individuals with these conditions.
Dr. Sekely is passionate about her work and offers an integrative approach informed by cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based interventions, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and self-compassion frameworks.
At Toronto Psychology Centre, Dr. Sekely will also be training in emotion focused therapy and will be integrating these interventions into her work when appropriate to best meet clients’ needs.
Dr. Sekely’s warm, caring, and genuine approach helps to create a safe and comfortable therapeutic space within which clients are encouraged to take a fresh look at their upsetting experiences. In a collaborative manner, she helps clients explore and change problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, identify and move towards meaningful goals, and learn skills to effectively navigate difficult challenges. She hopes that therapy will help you feel empowered and cultivate a deep and compassionate connection to yourself where you experience being important and valued.
Dr. Sekely obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Toronto. She has worked in a variety of academic and hospital-based institutions including the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH), Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Western Hospital, Baycrest Health Sciences, and at the University of Toronto’s counselling centre. She completed her residency at Baycrest Health Sciences, providing services in neuropsychology, psychological intervention, and cognitive rehabilitation with adults and older adults. In addition to providing assessment and treatment services in private practice, she is currently completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, which includes advanced training in neuropsychological assessment for adults and seniors with cancer. She is actively involved in research examining various factors that promote optimal psychosocial and cognitive function in individuals with brain tumors. Most recently, Dr. Sekely received the Princess Margaret Postdoctoral Research Award to develop and evaluate a psychoeducational resource for brain tumour patients and their caregivers that provides information about possible effects of brain tumours on cognition, and evidence-based behavioural strategies to mitigate those effects. As she focuses more intensively on this research, Dr. Sekely has had to reduce her clinical work and is therefore not currently accepting new clients.
Dr. Sekely is a member of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) and the Psychotherapy Practice Research Network.
