Dr. Amberley Buxton, PhD, C.Psych. Psychologist

Dr. Amberley Buxton is a registered clinical and counselling psychologist. She offers assessment and treatment to adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including Anxiety Disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety/excessive worry, social anxiety, panic, agoraphobia) Depressive Disorders, trauma, and substance use. She also has experience providing therapy for other life challenges such as emotion dysregulation, conflict around family of origin, interpersonal difficulties, life transitions and adjustments, loss/grief, perfectionism, and self-criticism. Dr. Buxton has training in the following evidence-based treatments: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT).

Her approach to therapy is warm, grounded, and highly supportive. She feels honoured to be invited into your life and strives to balance both acceptance and working toward change. She listens closely to what you would like to achieve in therapy, and integrates evidence-based treatment in a collaborative manner.

Dr. Buxton completed a Ph.D. in counselling psychology at the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). She has over 10 years of clinical experience. The majority of her work experience has been in outpatient services in a hospital setting where she provided individual therapy, group therapy (DBT skills, CBT, and process-based groups) and psychodiagnostic assessments. Dr. Buxton has supervised graduate students and participated in program development in this setting as well.

Her earlier experience involved providing psychological services in private practice, a community family services agency, and a university setting. Dr. Buxton’s research interests include experiences of posttraumatic growth (i.e., positive change) following trauma, the psychological impact of life-threatening illness, and the change process in therapy. Dr. Buxton completed her doctoral internship at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Lakeridge Health. At CAMH she trained in an inpatient setting with the Women’s Program. She conducted psychological assessments and provided individual and group therapy.

At Lakeridge Health, she trained in the Adult Outpatient Mental Health program with adults presenting with a wide range of mental health issues and provided individual therapy and conducted comprehensive psychological assessments. In addition, at Lakeridge Health, she completed training in the Early Psychosis Intervention Program and conducted psychological assessments with young adults experiencing first episodes of psychosis.

Dr. Buxton is a member of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (CACBT).
