Assessment for Giftedness

Toronto Psychology Centre provides assessment for giftedness at all age levels. Individuals seeking a gifted assessment often want to clarify whether their child meets a school board or private school’s criteria for gifted programming.

All students deserve equal access to learning and achievement. We strive to facilitate placement of gifted children in the most enabling learning environment.

Testing for giftedness is typically completed with the administration of a standardized intelligence test.

In some situations, when there is concern about a Learning Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or emotional difficulties that may be hindering your child’s academic progress, we can complete more in-depth psychoeducational testing to clarify and make recommendations about their full scope of needs as well as provide information to support an Individual Education Plan (IEP). We value your input and collaboration to ensure we are providing the most helpful assessment possible.

What to expect from testing for giftedness

Gifted testing includes a file review (e.g., report cards), clinical interview with the child and his/her parent(s), and the administration of a standardized intelligence test such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V). The WISC-V is considered an accurate and comprehensive test of cognitive ability. Psychological testing for giftedness is an objective and standardized way to determine whether a child can be identified as gifted.

Meeting the needs of gifted children

Gifted children need guidance, support, and intervention. They can sometimes underachieve academically for many different reasons such as boredom in class, holding perfectionistic standards, or fear of failing; excessively high standards and persistent upsetting emotions can interfere with school performance. In situations that warrant a more comprehensive assessment, we are committed to helping you identify your child’s full range of needs and maximize their strengths in order to set them on a path toward success.

It is helpful to identify giftedness at an early school age because it sets the tone for your child’s education and the expectations of teachers who will guide their education. Recommendations based on our assessment may include enrichment activities and/or specific after-school programming. Whether or not a child meets criteria for identification of giftedness, we want to ensure that all children understand their unique strengths and help them take ownership of their learning so they may excel to the best of their abilities.
