Knowing why something happens doesn’t always change how we feel or respond.

You may recognize that you’re overly self-critical, avoid conflict, or repeatedly seek reassurance. Yet when a familiar situation arises, you find yourself responding in much the same way.

Emotional and behavioural patterns can become deeply learned. Some may once have helped us cope, protect ourselves, or manage difficult relationships.

Therapy can help you recognize these patterns as they occur, understand what maintains them, and develop different responses.

Depending on your needs, this might involve practising new behaviours, working through difficult emotions, or experiencing new ways of relating to yourself and others.

Insight can be an important beginning. Change often requires opportunities to respond differently.
